How to Charge for Parking at a Gym or Leisure Centre

The CarSpark team7 min read

If you want to charge for parking at your gym, you need three things: clear signage stating the terms and price, a way for drivers to pay that doesn't require a barrier or an ANPR camera install, and — in the UK — an accredited enforcement route for the small number of people who don't pay. For most gyms and leisure centres, the simplest starting point is a QR-code payment system rather than a full barrier-and-camera installation: drivers scan a code on a sign, pay for the time they're parked, and you never touch cash or chase anyone at reception. Scan · Pay · Park.

Why Gyms and Leisure Centres Charge for Parking

Gym car parks are a shared resource, and free parking tends to get used by people who aren't members at all — commuters, shoppers, anyone parking near a busy retail strip. Charging non-members (or charging everyone a small fee, with member discounts) is how a lot of gyms protect spaces for the people actually paying to use the facility.

The complaint that shows up again and again in driver forums isn't really about the price — it's about being fined unexpectedly, for overstaying a free period or for a number plate that wasn't registered correctly. That's a signage and process problem, not a pricing problem, and it's worth designing your setup around avoiding it rather than just picking a payment method and hoping for the best.

Your Options for Gym Car Park Payment

Most gym car park payment options fall into two camps: marketplaces that pre-book spaces to a driver audience, and pay-on-arrival systems for people who are already outside your building.

Service Model Driver cost Host fee Payout Self-serve for a small gym?
JustPark Marketplace — drivers pre-book a space in advance about 20-25% of the checkout total on small bookings a 3% payment-processing fee per booking payouts take up to 10 business days Built for pre-booked spaces, less suited to walk-in gym parking
YourParkingSpace Marketplace with ANPR a 20% uplift on top of the host's listed price host keeps listed price minus a 3% processing fee deducted monthly a monthly payout cycle Yes
RingGo Pay-by-phone tied to an operator account commonly around 20p per transaction a negotiated B2G/B2B contract, not self-serve signup N/A No — operator contract only
PayByPhone Pay-by-phone typically under £0.35 per transaction Operator-set N/A Limited
APCOA Connect / ScanPay Web-based, no app required, registration optional small private hosts go through sales/management contracts, not self-serve signup N/A No — APCOA-managed sites only
CarSpark accountless, no-app, QR-code car parking payment platform €0.29 (Ireland) / £0.25 (UK) flat fee per session 0% commission — keep 100% of your parking price about 2 working days Yes — sign up and go live yourself

CarSpark runs payments on Stripe Connect Standard with direct charges, so funds never enter a CarSpark-owned account — we physically cannot touch your money. There's a minimum charge of €1/£1 per session, and the platform default service fee is €0.29 / £0.25, paid by the driver, not deducted from your price. The Legal Basics in the UK

In the UK, the parking contract is formed by clear signage — no adequate signage means no contract, so your terms and price need to be visible before a driver parks, not buried behind a QR code they only see once they've already left the car. Since 1 October 2024, the BPA and IPC operate a single industry Code of Practice covering signage, grace periods and appeals, worth checking your signage against even if you never plan to issue a charge notice yourself.

If someone doesn't pay, a Parking Charge Notice is a claim for breach of contract enforced through the civil courts — it is not a criminal fine, and is legally distinct from a council Penalty Charge Notice. ParkingEye v Beavis confirmed private operators can enforce these charges provided the terms are clear. To get DVLA registered-keeper details to chase a non-payer, an operator must be accredited — you cannot get keeper data directly as an ordinary landowner, and generally have to go through an accredited operator that holds BPA or IPC membership. Under the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012, you cannot clamp a car on private land in England and Wales — clamping is banned outright. For VAT, off-street parking is a standard-rated supply at 20%.

The Legal Basics in Ireland

Ireland doesn't have a UK-style statutory private-parking or keeper-liability scheme. A private operator's parking charge is a civil, contractual matter based on the posted terms, and there's no DVLA equivalent — no register of owners for private operators to check against. Clamping is lawful but regulated under the Vehicle Clamping Act 2015, overseen by the National Transport Authority, which sets signage, appeals and maximum-fee requirements. Car park charges are liable to VAT at the standard rate, currently 23%.

CarSpark proves the model in Ireland first, then UK, and is built and operated by Cú Chulainn Tech Limited, a private company limited by shares, incorporated in the Republic of Ireland.

Setting Up Paid Parking at Your Gym with CarSpark

Because CarSpark is accountless — no account, no app, no password for the driver — setup for you is mostly about the physical car park, not software. You put up signage with a QR code and your price; members and visitors scan it with their phone camera, pay, and park. There's nothing for them to download and nothing for you to install beyond the sign itself.

Registration handling is designed not to create the fine-dispute problem gyms run into elsewhere: CarSpark's plate enrichment uses free official sources only and degrades to plate-only when it can't find a match — it never gates payment. There's no pan-EU registration checker for private use, because EUCARIS is government-authorities-only, so no payment platform can promise perfect plate matching across borders, and CarSpark doesn't pretend otherwise.

Avoiding Fines, Disputes and Bad Reviews

The recurring pain point in gym parking complaints is drivers feeling ambushed by a fine after being unclear on the terms. Three things reduce that risk regardless of which payment method you pick: put the price and terms on a sign drivers see before they park, keep any free or member period clearly stated with a visible grace period, and make paying as fast as buying a coffee so no one is tempted to skip it and hope. A payment flow that takes a phone scan and a card tap, with no account to create, removes most of the friction that turns into a support ticket or a one-star review.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need planning permission to charge for parking at my gym? That depends on your local authority and whether you're changing the use of the land, not on the payment method — check with your council before introducing charges, separately from picking how drivers will pay.

Can I clamp a car that doesn't pay for parking at my gym? In England and Wales, no — clamping on private land is a criminal offence under the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012. In Ireland, clamping is lawful but regulated by the NTA under the Vehicle Clamping Act 2015, with rules on signage, appeals and fees.

Do I have to charge VAT on gym parking fees? In the UK, off-street parking is standard-rated for VAT at 20%. In Ireland, car park charges are standard-rated at 23%. On-street local-authority parking is treated differently in both countries, but that generally won't apply to a gym's own car park.

Do drivers need to register a number plate in advance to use CarSpark? No — CarSpark is accountless and app-free, and plate enrichment never gates payment. It uses free official sources and degrades to plate-only when there's no match, which is also why there's no pan-EU registration checker for private use — EUCARIS is government-authorities-only.

What does CarSpark cost a gym to set up? Nothing to set up, and 0% commission on what you charge — CarSpark's flat driver fee (€0.29 in Ireland, £0.25 in the UK) is paid by the driver per session, with payouts landing in about 2 working days.
